The Justice and Peace Unit was established by the Methodist Church at a time when due to the recent war and the prolonged state of emergency the need was felt by the Church to keep track of the Human Rights situation and Peace promotion efforts in Sri Lanka. This Unit has been functioning for one year, and its mandate covers issues related to social justice. At its inception Justice and Peace Unit established links with many Institutions and Organisations of the Government that were engaged in protection of Human Rights and promotion of Peace, such as the Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights, The Peace Secretariat, and the Human Rights Commission. Some of them continue to have communications with this Unit. The work of the Justice and Peace Unit is reinforced by the directions and guidance of the sub Committee on Justice and Peace which now meets fortnightly.
